Heavyweight
1. Fedor Emelianenko (29-1-0, 1 NC)
Emelianenko's brutal sparking of Andrei Arlovski in their Jan. 24 Affliction headliner has given rise to fervent, polarized discussion over whether Emelianenko is supernatural or fortunate. Any discussion of the sport's heavyweight king is welcomed, though, as he should have another blockbuster heavyweight bout this summer, when he’s expected to meet Josh Barnett.
2. Andrei Arlovski (14-6-0)
For three minutes, Arlovski was better than ever while peppering the sport's heavyweight king, Fedor Emelianenko, from range. Then, one cruel flying knee attempt later, Arlovski was face down, out cold on the mat -- a brutal punctuation mark put on what began as Arlovski's finest performance.
3. Josh Barnett (24-5-0)
Barnett's Jan. 24 victory over Gilbert Yvel at Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" was hardly one of his finest. However, the victory, coupled with the triumph of Fedor Emelianenko, should set up a high-stakes heavyweight marquee for Affliction's third offering in the early summer.
4. Frank Mir (12-3-0)
In a fight that he was almost universally counted out of, the former UFC champion turned in the best performance of his career, technically trumping Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira en route to becoming the first man to ever stop “Minotauro.” Now, sometime in 2009, Mir will have to duplicate his February win over Brock Lesnar to become the UFC’s undisputed heavyweight king.
5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1, 1 NC)
Nogueira, the early favorite in the UFC’s ad hoc heavyweight tournament, turned in a woeful performance against Mir, who completely took apart the former Pride heavyweight champion before finishing him off with punches in the second round. He’s still a top heavyweight, but Nogueira has a long way to go to erase memories of such a lopsided loss.
6. Brock Lesnar (3-1-0)
With the first legs of the UFC’s heavyweight tournament over, Lesnar will have the chance to make an enormous statement in just his fifth professional bout. He will take on Mir -- the man who handed him his first career loss at UFC 81 -- in a UFC heavyweight title unification match.
7. Randy Couture (16-9-0)
There is much hope for a fight with fellow fallen champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. That bout will have to wait, though, as "The Natural" is recovering from a nasty elbow injury. He had two abnormally large bone spurs mined from his elbow, and he’s also on tap for a leading role in Sylvester Stallone's forthcoming film “The Expendables.”
8. Tim Sylvia (24-5-0)
There’s no clear next step for Sylvia. The two-time UFC champion’s looking to drum up interest from Japanese promoters, as well as chasing a potentially lamentable bout with elder statesman Ken Shamrock, who would hardly offer Sylvia real competition.
9. Ben Rothwell (29-6-0)
A bout with Pedro Rizzo at Affliction’s Jan. 24 show did not materialize. Instead, Rothwell got in a tidy tune-up bout, bashing an overmatched Chris Guillen at Adrenaline MMA’s second event on Dec. 11.
10. Alistair Overeem (29-11-0, 1 NC)
Overeem has been experiencing a major resurgence in the MMA world, and the Dutchman turned in one of the most brilliant performances of his career in the kickboxing ring on New Year’s Eve. He completely destroyed K-1 World Grand Prix runner-up and resident bad boy Badr Hari in less than a round, bringing the hype surrounding the “Demolition Man” to critical mass.
Light Heavyweight
1. Rashad Evans (13-0-1)
With his brilliant knockout of Chuck Liddell at UFC 88 in September, Evans took an enormous leap into light heavyweight legitimacy. However, he truly validated himself when he halted Forrest Griffin at UFC 92 to capture the 205-pound crown and, with it, divisional supremacy.
2. Forrest Griffin (16-5-0)
Not only did Griffin lose his 205-pound UFC crown to Rashad Evans at UFC 92 in December, he also broke his right hand -- an injury that will keep him on the shelf until early autumn.
3. Quinton Jackson (29-7)
After his brutal swatting of arch-nemesis Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 in December, it seemed Jackson would be content to wait until the early summer for a blockbuster showdown with UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. However, with Zuffa needing a main event for the March 7 UFC 96 bill in Columbus, Ohio, we'll now get an extra dose of "Rampage" as he takes on Evans' teammate, Keith Jardine.
4. Lyoto Machida (13-0)
Unfortunately, Machida’s slated October match with Thiago Silva fell apart after Silva injured his back. However, Machida will get his big chance to convince all doubters and UFC brass on an even bigger stage that he’s the undisputed top challenger for the light heavyweight title. He’ll meet Silva at UFC 94 on Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas.
5. Chuck Liddell (21-6)
The on-again, off-again bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is on again: They will finally meet in the co-main event of UFC 97 in Montreal on April 17. It’s a do-or-die bout for two men desperate to turn their fortunes in the 205-pound division.
6. Wanderlei Silva (32-9-1, 1 NC)
Despite his brutal pair of victories over Jackson in Pride, Silva was summarily starched in his third meeting with “Rampage” at UFC 92, as he was knocked cold in the first round. The defeat sparked more debate as to whether “The Axe Murderer” still belongs in the 205-pound division.
7. Keith Jardine (14-4-1)
Jardine was already slated for a tough bout against Luis Arthur Cane when Zuffa asked him to headline UFC 96. "The Dean of Mean" stepped up, and now he’ll take on former light heavyweight king Quinton Jackson on March 7 in Columbus, Ohio. The match will be perhaps Jardine's biggest to date.
8. Thiago Silva (13-0)
A back injury postponed an October showdown with Machida, but, fortunately, the battle of undefeated fighters was given a second green light at UFC 94. In the most significant fight of his career, Silva will compete on a massive stage when he meets his fellow Brazilian on Jan. 31.
9. Luis Arthur Cane (9-1)
Keith Jardine's promotion to main event duty at UFC 96 didn't leave "Banha" without an opponent for long. The surging Brazilian banger will take on former WEC light heavyweight champ Steve Cantwell at UFC 97 in Montreal on April 18.
10. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (16-3)
Thrilling it was not, but Nogueira avenged his August 2002 loss to Vladimir Matyushenko with a second-round stoppage at Affliction's Jan. 24 "Day of Reckoning." Next for Rogerio is likely a bout in Brazilian mainstay promotion Jungle Fight on April 25.
Middleweight
Anderson "The Spider" Silva
1. Anderson Silva (23-4)
After considerable clamor over which division and which opponent Silva would tackle in his next bout, it is near official that “The Spider” will main event April’s UFC 97 in Montreal against fellow Brazilian Thales Leites. The bout will mark Silva’s fifth UFC middleweight title defense.
2. Yushin Okami (23-4)
The 185-pound elephant in the room for the UFC, Okami racked up his seventh win in the Octagon with an easy -- albeit awful -- unanimous decision victory over Dean Lister at UFC 92. The question now is whether the UFC will match Okami with a worthwhile opponent who will come to fight and whether Okami can be stirring enough to earn himself a title shot against Silva.
3. Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1)
It may not have been an MMA bout, but the 23-year-old Mousasi completely destroyed respected K-1 veteran Musashi at K-1 “Premium 2008 Dynamite.” The fight brilliantly displayed why the Dutch-bred, Armenian-born Mousasi is one of the sport's most enthralling young fighters.
4. Robbie Lawler (16-4, 1 NC)
Slated to defend his EliteXC middleweight title against Joey Villasenor, Lawler was left in no man’s land after EliteXC ceased operations. Now attention turns to where the “Ruthless” middleweight will land in a post-EliteXC world.
5. Nate Marquardt (27-8-2)
After an outstanding demolition of Martin Kampmann at UFC 88 in September, Marquardt will look to continue his march to another middleweight title bid when he takes on Wilson Gouveia at UFC 95 in London on Feb. 21.
6. Dan Henderson (24-7)
It was not without a bit of a brouhaha, but Henderson earned a split decision over Rich Franklin at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland, on Jan. 17. Now the former two-division Pride champ has earned a lengthy promotional vehicle coaching against Michael Bisping on the ninth season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” as well as the season's larger payoff: a marquee bout against "The Count."
7. Jorge Santiago (21-7)
Flunking out of the UFC is now a distant memory for Santiago. The American Top Team product has ripped off nine straight victories, all stoppages, including two tournament victories. With his Jan. 4 come-from-behind choke-out of Kazuo Misaki, he captured Sengoku’s middleweight title.
8. Thales Leites (14-1)
Luck smiled upon Leites, as the Nova Uniao product appears to be the winner in the Silva sweepstakes. Barring any changes of heart for Zuffa, the gifted grappler will challenge “The Spider” for his middleweight title at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montreal.
9. Chael Sonnen (21-9-1)
After emerging victorious in a truly bizarre November rematch with Paulo Filho, Sonnen will face a much more serious challenge in his next bout. The former U.S. Olympic wrestling team alternate will lock horns with undefeated prospect Demian Maia at UFC 95 on Feb. 21 in London.
10. Demian Maia (9-0)
The 31-year-old Brazilian has been nothing short of brilliant in racking up a 4-0 mark in the UFC, tapping all four of his adversaries. However, to emerge as a bona fide contender, the gi and no-gi genius will have to pass his next test against uncrowned WEC middleweight champion Chael Sonnen at UFC 95 in London on Feb. 21.
Welterweight
1. Georges St. Pierre (17-2)
His UFC 94 bout with B.J. Penn set, the welterweight division’s ruler -- having vanquished the only two men to defeat him -- will have a golden opportunity to answer perhaps the last nagging question surrounding him. He will attempt to earn a second but more clear and emphatic victory over Penn when they meet on Jan. 31.
2. Thiago Alves (16-3)
If there were any doubts as to who deserves the next crack at the UFC welterweight title after the St. Pierre-Penn rematch, Alves erased them with his sensational showing against Josh Koscheck at UFC 90 on Oct. 25. With an exciting and well-earned decision, the Brazilian has, in part, atoned for his weight-related indiscretions of the past and more than earned his crack at the UFC’s welterweight crown.
3. Jon Fitch (17-3, 1 NC)
Fitch will take on wily veteran Akihiro Gono at UFC 94 on Jan. 31 in a match that was originally scheduled for last March. The only downside? The card is so stacked that the bout has been relegated to the preliminaries.
4. Josh Koscheck (12-3)
After his sizzling knockout of Yoshiyuki Yoshida in December, Koscheck will get back into action at UFC 95 on Feb. 21 in London. There, he will meet undefeated Brazilian Paulo Thiago, as “Kos” stays incredibly active in the dynamic 170-pound division.
5. Diego Sanchez (19-2)
Although Sanchez previously announced that his future was as a welterweight, the “Nightmare” will take his act to the lightweight division. He will have the chance to inject himself into the midst of the 155-pound division when he meets Joe Stevenson in his lightweight debut at UFC 95 in London on Feb. 21.
6. Jake Shields (22-4-1)
EliteXC’s welterweight champion was keen on finally heading to the UFC, but the legal wrangling within the promotion’s still-gasping parent company, ProElite, has stalled Shields’ immediate jump into the Octagon.
7. Karo Parisyan (18-5)
After a freak, last-minute injury killed his anticipated Sept. 6 bout with Yoshida at UFC 88, Parisyan will get a chance to take on another tough fellow judoka. He will meet rugged South Korean star Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94 on Jan. 31.
8. Carlos Condit (23-4)
Condit was originally slated for an unappealing March rematch with former first-round victim Brock Larson, but recent reports have said the WEC welterweight champ will finally make the long-awaited jump to the UFC instead. "The Natural Born Killer" may debut on the April 1 UFC Fight Night card in Nashville, Tenn., where he could meet Martin Kampmann.
9. Matt Hughes (42-7)
The former welterweight ruler continues to recover from a knee injury. His long-delayed grudge match with fellow former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra will finally take place at UFC 98 on May 23.
10. Matt Serra (9-5)
Last April's rematch with St. Pierre was cruel to the former UFC 170-pound champion. However, "The Terror" will get another chance to prove he is more than a one-hit welter wonder when he finally meets up with Matt Hughes at UFC 98 on May 23.
Lightweight
1. B.J. Penn (13-4-1)
Always on the lookout for marquee challenges, the UFC’s lightweight champion will return to the welterweight division to rekindle his rivalry with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 on Jan. 31. However, when Penn returns to 155, there should be no shortage of suitors in the UFC's red-hot lightweight division.
2. Shinya Aoki (19-3, 1 NC)
While Aoki has affirmed himself as a bona fide lightweight star, Dream parent company Fighting and Entertainment Group are currently trying to persuade the Shooto world champion to return to the 168-pound division for the Dream welterweight grand prix, which kicks off in April.
3. Eddie Alvarez (15-2)
A Shinya Aoki heelhook on Dec. 31 left Alvarez with a tweaked knee, canceling his planned Jan. 23 tune-up against Naoyuki Kotani. However, the fiery Philly native is still slated for April action as part of the upstart Bellator Fighting Championships on ESPN Deporte.
4. Joachim Hansen (19-7-1)
Despite the attention given to his New Year's Eve rematch with Gesias Cavalcante, the bout was nixed at the last minute when a pre-fight medical test revealed undisclosed head injury to Hansen, which promptly canceled the bout. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for the sport's most notorious Norwegian.
5. Gesias Cavalcante (14-2-1, 1 NC)
Cavalcante was denied the chance to avenge his July 2004 loss to Joachim Hansen when their Dec. 31 date was canceled at the last minute. Fortunately, the bout's cancellation will give "JZ" more time to rehabilitate his knee injury and get ready for 2009.
6. Sean Sherk (33-3-1)
Sean Sherk's quest toward regaining the UFC lightweight title will continue at UFC 98 on May 23, where "The Muscle Shark" will take on fellow dynamic wrestler Frank Edgar.
7. Kenny Florian (11-3)
Florian affirmed his status as the top contender to B.J. Penn's UFC lightweight crown with his complete dismantling of Joe Stevenson at UFC 91. Florian's first-round blowout victory earns him re-entry into these rankings, and more than likely the second UFC title bid of his career.
8. Satoru Kitaoka (24-8-9)
The hulking Pancrase product continued his lightweight surge, effortlessly leglocking perennial divisional standout Takanori Gomi in under two minutes. The bout gave Kitaoka the Sengoku lightweight title, and some serious attention from the MMA populace who had heard little of Kitaoka prior to his recent run.
9. Josh Thomson (16-2, 1 NC)
Strikeforce's lightweight champion was given the chance to atone for his August 2004 highlight reel KO loss to Yves Edwards in his first title defense on Nov. 21. Unfortunately, Thomson tore ligaments in his toe, which forced him out of the bout and have put him on the shelf.
10. Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2)
Kawajiri turned in one of the most impressive performances of his career on New Year's Eve. While it wasn't an MMA bout, the "Crusher" absolutely stormed Japanese kickboxing icon Kozo Takeda with a brutal first-round stoppage that put the former Shooto world champion's improved striking on display.
Featherweight
1. Mike Thomas Brown (20-4)
While the WEC featherweight champ got to be the hometown favorite when he took the title from Urijah Faber in Florida this past December, MTB will be the figurative away team in his first title defense, as he takes on Lubbock native Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia in the headliner of WEC's March 1 bill in Corpus Christi, Texas.
2. Urijah Faber (22-2)
It took just 94 seconds for Faber to replicate his victory over Jens Pulver from last June, grabbing a submission over pounding out a 25-minute decision. However head-scratching the near-immediate rematch may have been, a win is a win, and the quick and dominant showing puts the former WEC champ in line to face the winner of the forthcoming Brown-Garcia bout.
3. Leonard Garcia (12-3)
After a whirlwind 2008, Garcia is set for the biggest fight of his career. The heavy-hitting Texan will have the home field advantage when he challenges divisional king Mike Thomas Brown for the WEC crown on March 1 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
4. Wagnney Fabiano (11-1)
It took him nearly the full fifteen minutes, but Wagnney Fabiano finished off former Shooto world champ Akitoshi Tamura after a dominating performance. With a Mike Thomas Brown-Leonard Garcia bout on the horizon, Fabiano, the former IFL champion, could be a bout away from meeting the winner and trying to add to his mantle.
5. Dokonjonosuke Mishima (19-6-2)
Mishima was originally sought after as an entrant in Sengoku's featherweight tournament, where he would've been an early favorite. Unfortunately, a knee injury suffered in training will keep Mishima on the shelf for the early portion of '09, and the colorful veteran plans to return to action in the early summer to defend his Deep featherweight title.
6. Hatsu Hioki (17-3-2)
All-but-official for Sengoku's featherweight tournament, Hioki will be an early favorite should he enter the bracket and may finally get the breakout that has long been predicted for the talented 25-year-old.
7. Jeff Curran (30-10-1)
"The Big Frog" will finally make his bantamweight debut at the April 5 WEC card in his backyard of Chicago, Illinois. Curran will be afforded the chance for some measure of revenge, as he takes on fast-rising Joseph Benavidez, a pupil of former WEC champ Urijah Faber who tapped Curran in their December 2007 title tussle.
8. Jose Aldo (13-1)
In his third WEC bout, Aldo turned in arguably his finest performance to date with his stirring knockout of Rolando Perez. It's just onward and upward for the 22-year-old star prospect from Nova Uniao.
9. Masakazu Imanari (15-6-1)
While Deep continues its eliminator tournament to find a challenger to Imanari's bantamweight title, Imanari will await Dream parent company Fighting and Entertainment Group to finally flesh out the details of its featherweight grand prix, which Imanari has been unofficially confirmed for since the idea was first kicked around.
10. "Lion Takeshi" Takeshi Inoue (15-3)
In need of a far better 2009 than 2008, the Shooto 143-pound king looked like he was going to be a part of Sengoku's featherweight tournament. Unfortunately, Shooto brass has demanded Lion's services for the May 10 Shooto 20th Anniversary card for a mandatory title defense against a yet-to-be-named challenger.
Bantamweight
1. Miguel Torres (35-1)
After years of toiling in Midwestern obscurity, the breakout bantamweight star will have a homecoming. Torres headlines April 5's WEC 40 bill in Chicago, Ill., taking on his biggest challenger to date in surging Georgia native Brian Bowles.
2. Masakatsu Ueda (8-0-2)
While he did not lose his title in his first defense, Ueda failed to secure victory, as he fought Marcos Galvao to a split draw in their Sept. 28 contest at "Shooto Tradition 3.” However, Ueda remains the torchbearer for bantamweights on the other side of the ocean.
3. Brian Bowles (7-0)
After a meteoric rise to the top of the bantamweight division, Bowles will now be part of the sport's biggest bantamweight bout to date as he takes on divisional ruler Miguel Torres on the champ's home turf in Chicago at WEC 40 on April 5.
4. Atsushi Yamamoto (12-5-1)
After a hot-and-cold run as a bantamweight, Yamamoto returned to the featherweight division for the biggest fight of his career. An underdog against Hideo Tokoro at Dream 6 in September, Yamamoto’s improved standup earned him a unanimous decision.
5. Marcos Galvao (6-2-1)
After being initially penciled in to meet American Top Team product Rafael Rebello, "Louro" will now be in decidedly tougher company against Greg Jackson scrapper Damacio Page on the WEC 39 undercard on March 1 in Texas.
6. Takeya Mizugaki (11-2-2)
Mizugaki stuck to the script, and the overwhelming favorite in GCM's Cage Force bantamweight tournament punched out veteran Masahiro Oishi in December's bracket final to take the title. Now, the former Shooto rookie MVP has his sights set on a WEC deal, though some of his handlers wish to see him stay in Japan in the new year.
7. Manny Tapia (10-1-1)
While there's no shame in losing to the division's best, Manny Tapia was ripped up by Miguel Torres in his Dec. 3 title bid. Now, "The Mangler" has to take his spot at the back on the line in a deepening, intensifying bantamweight division.
8. Koetsu Okazaki (5-1-1)
Okazaki was quite simply outclassed by the stronger, more technical Ueda in their March 28 title showdown at Shooto “Back to our Roots 8.” What’s next for the Osaka, Japan, native remains uncertain, as he has never been much of a workhorse.
9. Will Ribeiro (10-2)
Following his Dec. 3 loss to Brian Bowles, the talented 25-year-old Brazilian was involved in a motorcycle accident in Rio de Janeiro, which left him with a 50-50 chance to live. While still in an induced coma, Ribeiro has reportedly made positive progress, and here's hoping to a speedy recovery for a choice fighter.
10. Chase Beebe (11-3)
After a disappointing 2008 campaign, the former WEC bantamweight champion looks to start 2009 in better fashion when he meets Lloyd Irvin product Mike "The Hulk" Easton for the UWC's bantamweight crown on Feb. 21.
Flyweight
1. Shinichi Kojima (9-3-5)
Despite his thrilling July title defense over rival Mamoru Yamaguchi, it was back to lackluster ways for "BJ" as he fought to a dry draw with Guam import Jesse Taitano in their Jan. 18 non-title affair.
2. Mamoru Yamaguchi (20-5-3)
While his next MMA step may be uncertain, the former two-division Shooto world champion will take to the world of standup fighting, as he squares off with Shoot Boxing 122-pound champ Noriyuki Enari on Feb. 11.
3. Yuki Shoujou (8-4-2)
After his February thumping at Yamaguchi’s hands, the exciting 27-year-old did not look like he would offer much more than a spirited effort in his Shooto Tradition 3 bout with Urushitani on Sept. 28. Instead, Shoujou roared back from the brink of defeat, choking out Urushitani for the upset victory and the most significant win of his career.
4. Yasuhiro Urushitani (15-4-6)
Quickly looking to atone for his shocking September loss to Yuki Shoujou, Urushitani got back into action and got an easy victory on Nov. 8 in GCM's Cage Force, hacking open an overmatched Kiyotaka Shimizu for a first-round cut stoppage.
5. Ryuichi Miki (7-2-3)
Miki will again be the headliner for another Gutsman-promoted Shooting Disco card on Jan. 31. This time around, the former Shooto rookie champion will meet up with serviceable veteran Homare Kuboyama. |

saludos |
